The Challenge
Democracy advocates are being asked to manage risks they were never equipped to handle
Technology is woven through nearly every part of modern advocacy, from organizing and communications to research, fundraising, and collaboration. The same tools that make this work possible also expose individuals and organizations to surveillance, harassment, account compromise, disinformation, and preventable operational failures.
Most democracy and human rights organizations do not have dedicated technical staff. They need advice that respects their real constraints: limited time, limited money, varying levels of technical confidence, and urgent work that cannot simply stop while a new system is put in place.
What We Do
DemNerds turns technical expertise into practical help. We publish plain-language guidance that helps advocates make better decisions about accounts, devices, communications, privacy, online communities, and personal safety. The emphasis is on improvements people can make now, using tools and resources they can realistically sustain.
Through the Tech Checkup, participating organizations can receive hands-on digital advocacy and cybersecurity recommendations shaped around their own work. DemNerds also examines the larger relationship between technology and democracy: how digital systems have weakened institutions and public life, and where thoughtful intervention might help rebuild them.
Who We Are
DemNerds is a small, volunteer-run group of experienced technologists who have worked alongside civil society and advocacy organizations for years. It was created because too many people defending democracy and human rights face unprecedented digital threats without the staff, money, or support needed to respond.
The group combines technical experience with an understanding of how advocacy organizations actually work. Its resources are designed for people who need reliable guidance without jargon, expensive new systems, or an unrealistic list of security chores.
DemNerds focuses primarily on prevention and preparedness. It helps people reduce avoidable risks and build healthier technical habits; it is not an emergency response service for organizations facing an active incident.
